Existing homes trial progress
Close to 800 assessments of homes across Australia have now been completed as part of the NatHERS for existing homes trial.
The trial is a key opportunity for learning-by-doing with ratings and assessments being delivered by trial assessors for a wide range of houses and house types across Australia. The department has already implemented several improvements to the tools, processes, and scheme in response to the feedback from assessors and trial partners. The trial findings will be used to identify and prioritise further improvement actions for the scheme over the coming year.
Assessor accreditation
An existing homes Assessor Register was recently launched on the NatHERS website. As new assessors are accredited, they are added to the list.
Existing homes training and accreditation is currently available to trial assessors, or those preparing for the NSW Home Energy Ratings Disclosure Framework pilot. However, it will be rolled out more broadly from next year.
Read about the training and accreditation for existing homes assessors in the NatHERS Assessor Toolkit.
EOI call out for software developers
A reminder for software tool developers that they can now submit Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for accreditation of existing homes software tools. One submission has recently been received as part of the open-ended, non-competitive process.
The User Interface Protocol (UIP) was published on 8 July 2025 and outlines how developers can build tools that help streamline existing homes assessments and improve user experience.
Early contact with the NatHERS team helps ensure that any proposed tool meets fundamental requirements, and the team is looking forward to receiving further applications in the coming months. Find out more about the process.
