NatHERS software
The Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) provides a framework that allows various computer software tools to rate the potential energy efficiency of Australian homes. All software tools are required to assess the same minimum set of design features, and must produce a consistent rating.
NatHERS requires each software developer to demonstrate the compatibility of their software with specific minimum standards described in the Software Accreditation Protocol. The choice of software tools allows assessors to use the data input interface that best suits their needs, whilst ensuring consistent results.
In 2006, NatHERS was improved to require a more powerful second generation of software tools. The older and more limited software tools are being phased out in 2007 and will no longer be valid under the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme.

Second generation software
The new software includes:
- AccuRate (accredited May 2006)
www.hearne.com.au/products/accurate/ - BERS Professional (granted provisional accreditation 8 November 2007)
www.solarlogic.com.au/bers-pro/details - FirstRate 5 (granted provisional accreditation 31 August 2007)

These tools will be available for use subject to compliance with the Australian Building Codes Board Protocol for House Energy Rating Software for Residential Buildings Version 2006.1 which is referenced in the 2007 version of the Building Code of Australia.
Second generation software tools can use 69 different climate files (compared to 28 for the first generation). They calculate star ratings on a new scale developed to suit their capabilities. All second generation tools must contain a larger range of features including a more realistic modelling of:- natural ventilation
- the cooling effects of ceiling fans
- heat flows in underfloor and roof spaces
- attached dwellings (apartments).
First generation software (to be discontinued in 2007)
The best known tools from the first generation of software are:
- NatHERS (Nationwide House Energy Rating Software)
- BERS (Building Energy Rating System)
- FirstRate (developed by the Victorian Government)
Software users of first generation tools are advised to upgrade to second generation tools as soon as practicable.
